Q&A With Dr. Miller

Q.
What words of advice do you have for families and patients considering blood or marrow transplantation?
A.
Dr. Miller: Blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) is a serious undertaking which is being recommended for your child because she or he has a life-threatening disease for which no better therapy exists. It is essential that you and your family fully understand the rationale for using BMT for the disease, the benefits that BMT offers over other treatments, the risks that accompany BMT and what it will actually "look like" for you or your child to "go through" BMT. As such, please know that our entire team (office staff, nurses, coordinators, nutritionists, social workers, child life specialists, nurse practitioners/physician's assistants, and physicians) is dedicated to providing you with insight into the above.
Q.
Why should families choose the pediatric BMT program at the University of Minnesota?
A.
Dr. Miller: It is unusual to find the degree of expertise in the process of pediatric BMT, in managing its complications, in the underlying diseases which necessitate it, and in the basic science which ultimately improves its outcomes as is found at the University of Minnesota. However, beyond the reputation of "the U" as a leader in pediatric BMT you'll find a team of people dedicated to the well-being of each and every patient for whom we care.
